(Un)Satisfying Snickers

 By Jessica Edwards

"PACKED WITH PEANUTS, SNICKERS REALLY SATISFIES"... that's what it tells me on the package anyway. If it's true, then why do I want another one, and another, and another? Could it be that my Snickers bar really doesn't satisfy all that much?

Have you ever been dissatisfied in a spiritual sense, filling up on "spiritual Snickers" but never fully satisfied? I have.

Some of those spiritual Snickers have been a longing to see success in ministry, looking for a more "fulfilling" ministry, or just a different ministry or church. I've longed for the Snickers of affirmation/validation, friendships/relationships, and successful homeschooling and parenting. None of these things are sinful in and of themselves (just like eating a Snickers bar isn't sinful), but if these are the things I am seeking for satisfaction, I will find myself dissatisfied and waiting to take another bite from another Snickers.

In Psalm 17:15, David says, "As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness."

Can I say that too? Can I say I am satisfied to keep my eyes on the Lord, seeking His face (and not His hand), looking at the glory of the Lord and being transformed into His image? (2 Cor. 3:18) Am I living this life being satisfied in Him as I look to eternity? Is that truly where I find my satisfaction? It should be.

In Psalm 107:8-9 the Psalmist says, "Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness."

As I stare longingly at my Snickers bar, I know it will not truly satisfy, but neither will any work or service I do for Jesus truly satisfy me. Only in and with HIM can I be truly satisfied because HE is enough! Oh, Lord, keep me from looking to lesser things for my satisfaction!
